In the early 50's, the business consisted of only two trucks, when the main source of income was hauling livestock. The animals were picked up at farms in the St. Joseph area and hauled to the stockyards in S. St. Paul. After the truck was unloaded, the trailer was washed out and cleaned thoroughly. General freight was then picked up in the Twin Cities and brought back to the local businesses. It was very important to Gene to keep his equipment spotless, which is something Scherer Trucking continues to take pride in today.
As Gene's company grew, so did his family, having five children - three daughters and two sons. The boys, Mike and Chuck, became very interested in the trucking business and at a young age they worked side by side with their dad.
They became so involved in the company that on June 8, 1983, Mike, along with his wife Ann, and Chuck, with his wife Ann, bought the business. They kept the name Gene Scherer and Sons Trucking, Inc. Bill Scherer, Chuck's son, became manager in the dispatch office in 2008, after ten years with the company.
Over the years, business has continued to grow. Mike & Chuck take the same pride in their company as Gene, keeping the equipment well maintained and going the extra mile to make sure every customer is fully satisfied. It is very important to make sure scheduled deliveries are always on time. Scherer Trucking has continued to be a trusted & reliable company that will always be family oriented.
Gene and his family were always tinkering and improving the trucks. Pictured here (left to right) Gene's niece, Chuck, daughter Kim, Mike, and Gene.
